MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell on Tuesday reported stunning news about the attorneys defending Donald Trump in proceedings involving his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen, revealing the founders of the law firm representing the president originally called for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

O’Donnell explained that the ongoing courtroom drama unfolding with Cohen in the southern district of New York is more threatening to the president than “anything that is happening in Robert Mueller’s” Russia investigation. In New York, O’Donnell reported, Trump is “fighting to suppress evidence” obtained through the FBI’s raid on Cohen’s office and residence.

“People are very very worried,” O’Donnell said.

The host went on to note that Spears & Imes, the law firm representing Trump, is “the best legal hire that Donald Trump has made in his life.”

“Donald Trump is cheap,” O’Donnell said. “That’s why Michael Cohen is in his life. That’s why Michael Cohen might ruin his life.”

“Donald Trump is getting the best lawyers he can get,” O’Donnell continued, adding that he’s paying for it with funds from his presidential campaign fund. But what the president does not know, the host said, is that the “founders of that law firm were assistant U.S. attorneys” who served with former FBI Director James Comey.

“Three days after Trump fired James Comey, Spears & Imes wrote a letter to [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein calling for the appointment of a special counsel,” O’Donnel said.

“And Donald Trump does not know that,” O’Donnell later added.
