French President Emmanuel Macron is well-known for his charm.
Meanwhile, President Trump is well known for his vanity.
Put the two together, and you have a recipe for bromance. Which is exactly what happened when the French president made an official state visit to Washington.
None of it was surprising to MSNBC analyst Christopher Dickey, world news editor of the Daily Beast, who has lived in France for 30 years.
Dickey noted that Macron was able to denounce Trumpism in front of Congress, but that the president might not mind given the bond Macron was able to forge.
"His positions on all kinds of key issues appear to be diametrically opposed to Donald Trump's," he said. "He has to try to create a situation where his personal chemistry with Trump will overcome the personal differences. Maybe he's going to be able to do this. He's kind of a genius, Macron. He's a genius of personal relations."
Macron, who has a wife 20 years his senior, gets along well with older people, Dickey said. And that's key here because Trump liked to be flattered.
"It's like a father taking care of his son, which is something that Macron has always played on," he said. "One reason that he is where he is, he knew how to use older people including older men. Make them feel like he's the son they wish they had."
