On the side of Hawaiian volcano Kilauea cracks and plumes opened up, where steam and lava was able to flow down the sides. When the lava drained out of the volcano, boulders and debris fell back into the summit. So, geologists warned that if the scalding lava dropped below the water table, the hot lava hitting the cool water would result in an explosion of steam so powerful that the boulders and debris that fell in would explode.


This week, another crack, or fissure, opened up, and the explosion began sending dangerous debris into the air and in the towns around the volcano.

While photos of golfers driving their balls down the fairway with an apocalyptic backdrop have gone viral, there are many from geologists, Hawaiian residents and journalists that show the truly horrific power of nature.
