The co-chairs of the far-right House Freedom Caucus are demanding that Attorney General Jeff Sessions release unredacted files which would reveal the targets of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, Politico reported Wednesday.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Mark Meadows (R-NC), joined by Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) wrote the letter to President Donald Trump, demanding he order AG Sessions to release the investigation files.
“We write to request that you exercise your authority as president of the United States to instruct Attorney General Jeff Sessions to immediately produce all documents requested by Congress,” the letter began.
Specifically, the letter demands the release of “the unredacted August 2017 memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein that articulated the scope of the Special Counsel’s jurisdiction.”
The August 17, 2017 memo was entitled “The Scope of Investigation and Declaration of Authority” for the special counsel investigation.
The three-page memo, that was made public in federal court filings, was heavily redacted.
Releasing the memo publicly would inform targets of the investigation of what allegations were being probed at the time the memo was written.
Additionally, the conservative lawmakers allege the “Department of Justice has obstructed Congressional oversight by refusing to supply necessary and relevant documents.”
Politico described the letter as “an extraordinary request” from the Trump-supporting lawmakers.
“The president wants transparency,” Rep. Jordan claimed. “The president wants the truth out there and this is the best way to get it.”
