Remember the moments after the Parkland shooting, when Donald Trump supported strong new background checks for gun owners?
Mark Kelly does. The former astronaut is the husband of former U.S. rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, and has been an outspoken gun control activist since his wife's shooting.
Kelly, who as an astronaut lived just a few miles from the site of today's shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, hammered Trump's flip-flop on CNN tonight.
"I think it was on a Tuesday—he spoke very pointedly to a number of U.S. Senators and said that they were scared of the National Rifle Association and then maybe he would have to be the person that went forward and got background checks," Kelly said. "That was Tuesday. By Thursday, he completely lost interest and about two months later he was the speaker at the National Rifle Association convention in Dallas."
In the end, Trump did nothing to pushing things in a "positive direction." Kelly said.
"I think the only directive thing he did is he said we should fly the flags at half staff," Kelly said.
