A Democrat won a special election Tuesday in a Missouri district that carried President Donald Trump -- and Republicans say that race should serve as a warning.
Democratic state Rep. Lauren Arthur soundly defeated state Rep. Kevin Corlew for a state Senate seat in the north suburbs of Kansas City that has been held by the GOP for more than a decade, reported the Kansas City Star.
Arthur won Missouri’s 17th Senate district by 59.6 percent to 40.3 percent for Corlew, just days after Republican Gov. Eric Greitens resigned in disgrace last week.
Trump won the district by five points in 2016, but Republicans say the nearly 20-point loss by Corlew could be a harbinger of a midterm bloodbath.
“Every suburban Republican should be petrified tonight," one Republican strategist told the Star. "This devastating loss signals they could lose this fall.”
