On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced he plans to retire in a letter to President Donald Trump.
Kennedy vacating his Supreme Court seat gives President Trump an opportunity to further stack SCOTUS and promote his policy agenda.
The Internet’s reaction was swift and brutal: some people pointed out that Kennedy had hardly been a paragon of progressivism during his tenure. Others prophesied doom.
You know shit’s really fucked when people are sad over losing Justice Kennedy

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring. Among other things, his replacement will likely overturn Roe v. Wade, which will allow states to prohibit abortion. The consequences of the 2016 election have never been more stark.

This morning @smencimer reported that Anthony Kennedy is no longer the swing justice—he’d sided with the conservatives in all 17 5-4 decisions this term. After Janus, make that 18. https://t.co/qpQRNnA58Z

Kennedy handing his seat over to Trump is the most perfect example *ever* about how it is all the party of Trump. All of it. Kennedy looks down from SCOTUS and sees the man in the White House and says “Yes. Him. I want him to be the one to choose my replacement.”

Justice Anthony Kennedy made a lot of consequential decisions during his time on the bench. I will remember him for this timid rebuke of Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim bigotry while voting to uphold the Muslim ban the day before announcing his retirement. pic.twitter.com/sHgEAAMKF2
