After building a literal wall in a campaign ad, a GOP congressional candidate in Tennessee said he finds the backlash he's received "astonishing."
In an interview with Fox & Friends, candidate Jason Emert said building Donald Trump's wall to keep Mexican immigrants out "is the most important issue our country faces."
"Enforcing the rule of law and our border integrity and our national security depends on having a wall built," the candidate told Fox News host Pete Hegseth. "I think President Trump is right and I wanna let people know where I stand."
When the host asked him how he would be different from elected members of Congress who have "dragged their feet" on funding the wall and making sure it gets built, Emert didn't have an answer. He instead chose to attack his "career politician" opponents for their experience working in legislative bodies.
"Why does the left hate the wall so much?" Hegseth asked the candidate, interrupting him.
"You should see some of the hate I've received on Twitter just from posting this [campaign ad]," Emert responded. "I've been called everything under the sun."
He went on to say that he doesn't know why people oppose Trump's wall.
"It really is astonishing to me," Emert said. "It's about national security."
