The head of the Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association has resigned over a racist texting scandal, reports San Jose Inside.

Deputy Don Morrissey had been demoted for looking at porn at work and receiving racist text messages from former officers that said things like “We could hang  n*ggers in Haiti for about 75 bucks tops.”

Among the racist texts were those that included the slurs “n*g nogs,” “g**ks” and “k*kes."

That led to a meeting to discuss the racist texts with the association.

“In the light of the meeting I was even more committed to doing what I could to heal the issues that arose,” Morrissey wrote. “I met with the [deputy group's board] and identified what I thought was an answer to the systemic issues regarding biases and the lack of reporting that still remain at the department. Furthermore, I met with prominent community leaders to discuss the issues, my proposed program, and asked for their assistance.”

While Morrissey has stepped down as a union official he is still a law enforcement officer.
