Trump flip-flops on EU tariffs in less than 24 hours -- wants to 'drop all tariffs, barriers'

On Wednesday, members of the European Union are set to come to Washington to discuss trade.

Ahead of the meeting, President Donald Trump tweeted a taunt to US allies Tuesday night.

"The European Union is coming to Washington tomorrow to negotiate a deal on Trade. I have an idea for them. Both the U.S. and the E.U. drop all Tariffs, Barriers and Subsidies! That would finally be called Free Market and Fair Trade! Hope they do it, we are ready - but they won’t!" the President wrote.

The Tweet seems to counter the President's earlier statement on tariffs—and his position on trade more generally, which has sought to raise tariff's as a form of protectionism to help US industry.

This afternoon, Trump tweeted in favor of tariffs.

"Tariffs are the greatest! Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs. It’s as simple as that - and everybody’s talking! Remember, we are the “piggy bank” that’s being robbed. All will be Great!"
