Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein: 'Serious people in both parties are questioning' Trump's loyalty to America

Reporter Carl Bernstein, who made his name writing bombshell reports on the Watergate scandal during the Nixon years, laid out in stark terms the problems that President Donald Trump has created for himself with Monday's widely panned press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"This is a genuine national security emergency," Bernstein said. "Whether through incompetence, or questioning his loyalty, or whether he is ignorant, the President of the United States cannot be entrusted with the national security of the United States. That's what we saw where the two leaders appeared yesterday."

Bernstein then laid out how unprecedented this situation was in American history.

"We've never had a moment like this where serious people of both parties are questioning the loyalty of the President of the United States -- unprecedented," he said. "And we have to figure out how to deal with a President of the United States who, wittingly or unwittingly, has been compromised."

Bernstein wrapped up by saying that Trump is now openly colluding with the Russian government to undermine public confidence in the United States' intelligence assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

"What we saw yesterday was collusion, witting or unwitting, in the president's words and attitudes towards Putin," he said.
