After the White House finally released a statement on the weekend death of the late John McCain and re-lowered the flag to half-mast, an MSNBC host and former McCain staffer mused that it was too little too late.

Donald Trump's statement was "like a band-aid on a stab wound," host Nicolle Wallace noted.

Earlier in the segment, GOP consultant Rick Wilson pointed out that the statement should have been "delivered the first moment we had the news" of McCain's death on Saturday.

"This is papering over something that is going to be a wound that the McCain family will have to face for a long time," Wilson said. "It's a shame that we had to have a public outcry just short of pitchforks and torches in front of the White House to get Donald Trump to grudgingly, slowly, you know, fighting like a toddler every step of the way to do the right thing here."
