Bush’s attorney general tells CNN Trump may believe White House counsel is his personal attorney
Alberto Gonzales speaks to Fox News (screen grab)

Former United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Monday said it was possible that President Donald Trump still does not understand that White House counsel Don McGahn isn't his personal lawyer.

During an interview with CNN's John Berman, Gonzales was asked whether he thinks Trump knows that McGahn's job is to defend the White House as a whole, and not to act as the president's personal "fixer," as estranged Trump attorney Michael Cohen once did.

"It is hard for me to say, I don't know what kind of conversations have taken place between Don McGahn and the president," Gonzales admitted. "So as to whether or not he fully understands that, I don't know. Perhaps he forgets, but I'm very confident that Don McGhan has had those kinds of conversations."

Elsewhere in the interview, Gonzales knocked the president for accusing Mueller of behaving like the late former Senator Joe McCarthy.

"I worked for Bob Mueller when I worked for the White House," Gonzales explained. "My experience is that he is a man of integrity. He's handled this investigation in the proper way."
