As the feud between Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions escalates, one of the attorney general's former GOP Senate colleagues took aim at the president.

"The attorney general's job is not to be a political hack," Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) told ABC. "The idea that Jeff Sessions might be fired because he's not a political hack is a very, very bad idea."

In other interviews with the network, one of Sasse's fellow Republicans in the Senate also stuck up for the attorney general.

"I know this is a difficult position for [Sessions] to be in but I think it would be bad for the country, it would be bad for the president, it would be bad for the Department of Justice for him to be forced out under these circumstances," Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the number two Republican in the Senate, said. "I hope he stays the course and I hope cooler heads prevail."
