America was reminded of what the word 'presidential' used to mean watching former President Barack Obama's tribute to fallen Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
Obama, who bested McCain in the 2008 presidential election, honored his formal rival during the Saturday services at the National Cathedral.
"Our politics, public life, public discourse can seem small and mean and petty. Trafficking in insult and phony controversies," Obama observed. "It's the politics that pretends to be brave and tough but in fact is born of fear. John called on us to be bigger than that."
“(Politics today is) trafficking in bombast and insult and phony controversies, and manufactured outrage. It’s a politics that pretends to be brave and tough, but in fact is more in fear," Obama argued.
The packed church laughed heartily and fought back tears as the former president honored McCain. And America.
