CNN's Jeffrey Toobin pointed out during a Friday panel in the wake of Paul Manafort's plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that Donald Trump appears to surround himself with "criminals."
"Think about how prominent these people are and they're all now convicted felons," Toobin said. "I mean, Donald Trump has more convicted felons around him than a lot of mafia dons. I mean it is just an extraordinary number of people."
Because the indictments against the president's associates "happened gradually," it was hard to see "just how many prominent people around Donald Trump are either on their way to prison or will be there shortly," the legal analyst said.
Toobin noted that the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied that Manafort, Michael Cohen, Mike Flynn and other aides ever "dealt directly" with the president and expressed incredulity at the claim.
"It's a hell of a coincidence that all of these people turn out to be criminals," he added.
