California Democrat Eric Swalwell tells CNN he's considering a 2020 presidential run

In a wider discussion about the mid-term elections, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) let slip to CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Monday that he's visited Iowa a few times this year and is considering making a run for the presidency in 2020.

Asked by Wolf what he thought of the advanced age of Democratic front runners Joe Biden (75) and Bernie Sanders (77), Swalwell said voters' choices "may break down generationally."

"Voters will have a choice: do they want to go a page backward or do they want to go forward," Swalwell said. "Our best nominees, the ones who have won, have always been when we go forward, whether that's Barack Obama, President Clinton, Jimmy Carter, John F. Kennedy."

Swalwell then threw his own hat in the ring, admitting to Blitzer that he'd already visited the crucial battleground state of Iowa in anticipation of a presidential run.

"I am considering it," he said, adding that he wanted to win his mid-term election first.

"I want to get through a full term and I'm going to think about the long-term," he said. "But I think new energy, new ideas and a new confidence in America is needed, and that's why I'm considering it."
