CNN's Jeffrey Toobin on Friday issued a blistering denunciation of Sens. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Ben Sasse (R-NE) for regularly criticizing President Donald Trump but doing nothing to curtail his power.

During a discussion about Trump's latest attacks on journalists, in which he praised a Montana GOP lawmaker for physically assaulting a reporter, Toobin said that we shouldn't expect any better of the president since he keeps getting rewarded for his outrageous behavior.

"This is the base of the party -- they love someone who takes on journalists," Toobin said. "This hatred of journalists -- you know, CNN prominently among them -- is just part of the Trump brand at this point."

Toobin saved his real fire for Republican critics of Trump such as Sasse and Flake who have regularly criticized him for inflammatory rhetoric, but who then dutifully vote for his desired policies and judicial nominees.

"Isn't the real story how little dissent there is in the Republican Party, not how much?" he asked. "We always talk about Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse, and they talk and do nothing. They never vote against the president. They never actually take a stand."
