New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman told CNN on Wednesday that the Trump White House has no idea how bad things could get for them if Democrats retake control of the House of Representatives in next Tuesday's midterm elections.
Although Haberman said that Trump might believe a Democratic House could be useful for the president as a foil heading into his 2020 reelection bid, she said that was greatly outweighed by the potential political and legal risks posed by an opposition party that is itching to use its subpoena powers to investigate multiple Trump White House scandals.
"I think you can expect there's going to be a rather broad menu of investigations that are going to be started by House committees if they are led by the Democrats," she said. "They certainly know they are going to face a large number of subpoenas."
Even though the White House knows what Democrats are likely planning in the event that they retake the House, however, Haberman said that they don't seem at all ready to handle the flood that's rushing toward them.
"I don't think they're prepared for that reality, honestly," she said. "This is going to be very, very ugly if that happens."
