Kris Kobach, a staunch ally running for governor of Kansas, told the crowd at Trump's rally in Topeka that an immigration crackdown could have stopped the 9/11 attack.

During a rant in which he claimed that "socialist" Democrats wanted undocumented immigrants to vote in elections.

Kobach said that his views about illegal immigration are rooted in the September 11 attacks.

"Let me tell you something that you might not know: All 19 hijackers came into this country legally on temporary visas," Kobach said.

However, while they came in legally Kobach suggested that a few had overstayed those visas and had been stopped for traffic tickets.

"Five of them became illegal, mostly by overstaying their visas," Kobach said. "Four of those five were stopped by state and local law enforcement for speeding violations. They were illegally in the country at the time but the cops didn't know it so they didn't make an arrest."

In Kobach's view, those men should have been arrested, foiling the 9/11 attacks.

"If they'd made those arrests, they could have stopped 9/11 from happening," Kobach claimed.
