Special counsel Robert Mueller has acquired emails and text messages from Donald Trump confidante Roger Stone, CNN reported Tuesday.
The reporting was based on "sources familiar with the investigation," who say witnesses are being presented with the digital records during questioning.
Mueller is also reportedly using Stone's reputation against him.
CNN interviewed former Stone employee Kristin Davis at the opening of her nail salon in Harlem and she revealed her impressions of her recent interview with investigators.
"Roger has carefully crafted his public image and sometimes that, I think, doesn't work in his favor," Davis said. "He's a victim of his own reputation."
Davis was bestowed the nickname the "Manhattan Madam" after being arrested in 2008 during arrests surrounding then-Governor Elliot Spitzer (D-NY). She served four months in the Riker's Island jail.
"I think they were framing things in a way to present Roger Stone as a villain to the jury," Davis recounted. "He is known as a dirty trickster, and these things can be used against you in terms of your character."
Stone was the focus of the 2017 documentary Get Me Roger Stone, which focuses on his reputation for working in the political dark arts.
The longtime Trump confidante suggested it might be a case of mistaken identity.
"Perhaps they are confusing me with the character I sometimes play, Roger Stone," he offered.
