On Friday, USA Gymnastics named Mary Bono as its new interim CEO.


Bono is the wife of the late pop star Sonny Bono, and was a Republican congresswoman from Palm Springs, Calif. after Bono's death during a skiing accident.

But immediately after Bono's hiring, tweets from Bono in which she defaced Nikes because of its marketing deal with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Rand Kaepernick.

"Playing in a charity golf tournament raising money for our nation’s Special Forces operators and their families. Unfortunately had these shoes in my bag. Luckily I had a marker in my bag too," she tweeted on September 7.

The tweets were quickly surfaced by reporters and the gymnastics community, who called on the organization to sever ties with Bono. Several parents said that Bono must be fired.
