Canada posted a budget surplus of C$1.21 billion in the first six months of the 2018-19 fiscal year compared with a C$6.18 billion deficit in the same period a year earlier, the finance ministry said on Wednesday.
Revenues jumped by 8.8 percent in the April-September period, helped by a greater intake from taxes and employment insurance premiums. Program expenses were up 2.8 percent.
In September, Canada ran a budget deficit of C$1.36 billion compared with a deficit of C$3.28 billion a year earlier.

Texas GOP official compares LGBTQ Republicans to ‘murderers and burglars’ in unhinged Facebook rant
Early on Wednesday morning, a Texas Republican Party official took to Facebook to attack the "Log Cabin Republicans," the GOP's LGBTQ advocacy arm.
The diatribe, first flagged on Twitter by author and nonprofit director Jessica Shortall, was in reply to a post by former LCR Houston official Marco Antonio Roberts, who was responding to a threat from a member of the State Republican Executive Committee to deny the LCR credentials at the Texas GOP State Convention.

In the wake of Shakira and J Lo's widely praised Super Bowl halftime show, the FCC received 1,312 complaints from viewers who were upset with the alleged sexual nature of the performance, CNN reports.
Some of the complaints came from parents who said they felt they were watching a "porno show" or an "X-rated strip club performance." CNN provided a few examples of the complaints that were received:
"Jennifer Lopez's performance at the Super Bowl halftime show was extremely explicit and completely unacceptable for a event where families including children are watching," a viewer from Utah said. "I had to send my children out of the room so that they weren't exposed to something they should not have seen."
Mother files complaint against formula producer after baby vomits worm
A French woman has filed a complaint against a baby formula manufacturer after her infant daughter allegedly vomited a parasitic worm the length of an adult index finger, police said Wednesday.
The incident came after another family allegedly found a living larva in a container of the same milk powder brand, Gallia, manufactured by French firm Danone.
Police in the northern region of Brittany told AFP the mother of a three-month-old child came in on Tuesday to file a complaint.
"In November, her three-month-old daughter had a high temperature," Saint-Malo police told AFP.
