The South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church has been asked to allow a Myrtle Beach church to become independent to avoid any new rules on homosexuality, The Sun News reports.
Rev. Jeff Dunn of the Christ United Methodist Church said a special conference of the Council of Bishops in February had put his 1,600 member congregation in an uncomfortable position.
“We are neither condemning nor condoning," Rev. Dunn claimed.
Dunn says his congregation has homosexual members, but he did not want to condone homosexual practices.
Dunn said he would decline to officiate a same-sex wedding and would refuse to ordain a practicing homosexuality.
If approved, the Christ United Methodist Church would simply be known as the Christ United Church.
