President Donald Trump dropped in for a quick moment of silence for former President George H.W. Bush, who is lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda
Bush was the father of the Republican leaders Trump spent so much time attacking and the Bush family isn't exactly keen on Trump or his presidency. But it was the internet that went off on the current leader during his Capitol visit.
After a quick wave to some guests and a comment to the first lady about leaving, Trump raised his right hand for a salute.
Given Trump's alleged draft-dodging, however, the internet decided Trump had no right to salute someone who nearly died during combat in World War II. Bush was the last president to have served in combat.
“I was scared but I was willing. I was young, but I was ready. I had barely started living when I began to see men die," Bush said years later.
Trump, by contrast, got five draft deferments for bone spurs to keep him out of the war in Vietnam.
The media has made hay of the president sending Air Force One to pick up the body of the former president and giving Blair House to the Bush family to stay while they're in town. As one user pointed out, this is part of the protocol for all presidents when they pass. Trump had no say in the matter.
One Marine, however, noted that his thumb was out of position and the salute wasn't done correctly.
