Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution Ben Wittes told MSNBC on Tuesday that he couldn't even begin to understand why President Donald Trump would attack his convicted former fixer Michael Cohen while praising his convicted national security advisor Michael Flynn, given that both men were cooperating fully with special counsel Robert Mueller.
"Occupying the head space of Donald Trump is a very dangerous game," Wittes said. "That said, he does seem to be concerned about what Mike Flynn, what the contents of Mike Flynn's communications with the special counsel's office have been. He does seem to have been concerned about that as early as when he importuned his FBI director to let the case against Flynn go."
Wittes said it was clear the president had "some serious anxiety about what Michael Flynn could do to him". But he added that until "those big redacted paragraphs" in convicted Trump associate's sentencing memo are clarified, Americans will just have to wait and wonder.
