President Donald Trump on Thursday linked his shutdown of the government to his already started 2020 reelection campaign.
Trump seemed to admit that Democrats had the votes in the Republican-controlled Senate to reopen government once Democrats control the House of Representatives in January, but said he had "the issue" of the wall for his 2020 campaign.
"This isn’t about the Wall, everybody knows that a Wall will work perfectly," Trump claimed. "This is only about the Dems not letting Donald Trump & the Republicans have a win."
"They may have the 10 Senate votes, but we have the issue, Border Security. 2020!" he tweeted.
In 2016, Trump won the presidency with a promise that Mexico would pay for his wall, but shut down the government in an attempt to get U.S. taxpayers to pick up the tab. His 2020 reelection slogan is "promises made, promises kept."
