United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May, in the middle of a bruising battle within her own party over how to leave the European Union, survived a confidence vote on Wednesday held in the House of Commons.
A vote of no confidence against May would have effectively ended her tenure as prime minister, which has been consumed since its inception with implementing the controversial voter referendum to leave the EU in 2016.
May has faced a revolt from within her own Conservative Party over how she has conducted Brexit negotiations with the European Union, as critics have contended that she has given the EU too much control over British sovereignty.
Additionally, May has faced anger from the tens of millions of U.K. citizens who voted to remain in the EU in 2016, most notably in Scotland, where a solid majority of voters elected to remain in the EU.
