Even as cable news is covering Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives on Thursday, President Donald Trump is once again claiming victory despite the fact that his party lost 40 seats in the House during the 2018 presidential election.

"The RNC has a great Chairwoman in Ronna McDaniel and the GOP has never been stronger," the president wrote on Twitter. "We achieved historic wins with her help last year!"

In fact, the GOP in 2018 suffered a historic loss in the House, as the 40 seats represented the biggest loss for the party in its history. What's more, Democrats in 2018 won the overall popular vote in congressional elections by the biggest margin since the Watergate scandal brought down former President Richard Nixon in 1974.

Additionally, Democrats picked up a net six governors' seats by scoring victories in states ranging from Maine to Nevada to even deep-red Kansas.
