
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) gave the introduction for Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the 116th Congress was gaveled in. The speech was a fiery
"We've had two years where Republicans have controlled the House, the Senate and the presidency — no border wall," said Jeffries. "So why in the world would it be reasonable to expect at this time the American taxpayer would pay for a ridiculous border wall?"
He went on to call Pelosi "a woman of faith, a loving wife, a mother of five, a grandmother of nine, a sophisticated strategist, a legendary legislator, a voice for the voiceless, a defender of the disenfranchised."
It served as a stark contrast to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) who followed the speech with a subdued nomination of Kevin McCarthy as the minority leader. She began by celebrating the chamber where the 19th Amendment was passed, granting women the right to vote before she nominated the male leader.
