MSNBC reporter Jacob Soboroff slammed President Donald Trump on Thursday, saying the humanitarian crisis at the border had been caused by the president himself.

"When you talk to people here along the border, a conversation about border security, the humanitarian crisis, it's always nuanced. The president has always made it about this wall," Soboroff said. "When he comes down here today, and we've spent a lot of time down here, he will hear from local officials, from local residents, that a wall is not the silver bullet to stop the problems down here."

"I think we have to remember that the crisis, the humanitarian crisis that is described by Donald Trump as taking place with women and children suffering along the border, if not created by the Trump Administration, was largely exacerbated by it," he continued. He added that the administration's policy of separating families and "metering people at the ports of entry" was "forcing or at least encouraging" people to enter the country illegally.

"That is the important context that needs to be repeated over and over about the president's visit here: when you talk about a crisis happening along the southern border, there isn't one of safety and security," Soboroff said. "We saw two children die in Border Patrol custody over the span of about three weeks just a couple weeks ago, that is something that's been, no doubt, exacerbated by the policies put into place by the Trump administration."
