Trump knows he is losing his shutdown fight and it’s showing in his language: Washington Post reporter

MSNBC chief political analyst and Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump didn't show his typical linguistic "verve and gusto" in last night's Oval Office address, which shows that the president knows he's losing his fight over the government shutdown.

"His support is leaking away in the Senate," Robinson said, and doubted that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would be able to "hold the line" much longer as Republican Senators begin to peel off.

"The other thing that's interesting, saw it last night, saw it again today, the sort of subdued tone that the president has, as if he's going through these motions," he added. "He's not giving an inch, but there is a sort of verve and gusto that I'm accustomed to seeing from this president that I'm not seeing in this fight."

"He's not winning the fight, he's losing the fight, and I don't think he sees how he can win it," Robinson continued. But he doubted whether the president would actually follow through on his threat to declare a national emergency. "Donald Trump, what he says today, you know, at 12:53, is not what we hear at 6:05."
