CNN legal analyst David Chalian was simultaneously shocked and dejected on Thursday as he discussed the ramifications of Michael Cohen's "damning" testimony, detailing President Donald Trump's alleged criminal activities. Specifically, he worried that Americans would simply shrug their shoulders.
"It is a sign of the times, I think, that the American people got more evidence yesterday than at any time in the last two years that Donald Trump was likely committing a crime, or part of committing a crime as president of the United States and yet I am skeptical that Americans' minds will be changed," Chalian said.
"The perceptions about Donald Trump are so locked in," he continued. "Yet the country just heard more convincing evidence than ever that he actually may have committed a crime. That is the state of our politics right now, and where we are as a people."
As evidence, he noted that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's response to Cohen's appearance was to hammer Trump on policy issues.
"She did not sound like a Speaker who was trying to lead her party in the aftermath of that testimony toward impeachment," Chalian said. "She sounded like she was trying to pull them away from that."
