'We are better than this': Watch Democrat Elijah Cummings deliver impassioned closing remarks in Cohen hearing
Rep. Elijah Cummings (MSNBC)

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Elijah Cummings (D-MD), ended proceedings Wednesday in Washington DC with an impassioned closing statement.

"As I sat here and listened to both sides, I felt like, we are better than this," he said.

"We are so much better than this....my hope is it's for our country to be better," the civil rights icon added.

"When our president has made at least 8,717 misleading statements," he lamented, "that's stunning."

"That's not what we teach our children," Cummings continued.

Then, Cummings took aim at Trump.

"When you call somebody a 'rat' that's one of the worst things you can call them," he said.

"We have got to get back to normal....with that, this meeting is adjourned," Cummings sighed.

After his closing remarks, he made a statement outside of the chamber to reporters.

"Today was a very important day," Cummings said

"I tell my staff 200 years from now, people will be reading about this moment."

"All we are trying to do is our job," Cummings continued. "The Constitution is abundantly clear...it says to us every two years, we raise our hands and we say that we swear to uphold the Constitution, and part of that [document] says that we have to be a check and balance on the executive branch."

He continued: "that's what this was all about....Mr. Cohen coming in and bringing evidence," he stated.

"I think the checks are very very significant or he talked about the man he knows and basically he did was to reintroduce the American people to the man that he has known for ten years," he said. "The Republicans didn't want to hear any of that.....that's all well and good, but that's not going to get us to where we need to get to as a nation."
