Mark Thompson, host of SiriusXM Progress, said on Thursday that Michael Cohen's testimony was the equivalent of a nuclear bomb going off for the Republicans who he described as stuck between their fear of their base and the growing pile of evidence that President Donald Trump is a criminal.

Thompson agreed with host Stephanie Ruhle that Republicans had missed "an opportunity to actually defend President Trump against the allegations," but said it was a matter of political calculations.

"They're playing to their audience back home watching on C-SPAN and Fox and what have you because all of them are afraid of being primaried," he said, saying the GOP would defend the president if they could.

"What Michael Cohen said yesterday, if what John Dean articulated before Congress was a cancer on the presidency, Michael Cohen articulated a mushroom cloud," Thompson continued. "This was a devastating testimony."

Thompson said the evidence Cohen offered in testimony "opens the door for more and more investigation on the part of House Democrats."

"Frankly, I don't think this should be treated matter of factly," he said. "This is major. The president is a criminal. That's all there is to it."
