Conservative activist Candace Owens has infuriated the students in three chapters of her own organization.
According to The Daily Beast, several chapters of the campus conservative group Turning Point USA denounced Owens and demanded she step down from her communications position with the group.
TPUSA chapters at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Bowling Green State University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder released the statement and noted that the group's leaders have ignored concerns they brought.
“It seems that controversy has always surrounded Candace Owens,” the statement reads. “We have seen many hard working (sic) activists and chapters across the United States dissociate with Turning Point USA simply because they can’t align themselves with the rhetoric and statements that have come out."
They noted they didn't think Owens was attempting to praise Hitler but her "clumsy communication skills" should block her from continuing in her role as the Communications Director.
They specifically brought up bizarre comments Owens made about Adolf Hitler in a 2018 speech that was revealed in February.
“Whenever we say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler,” Owens said at a Turning Point meeting in Europe. “But if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine. The problem is that he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way. To me, that’s not nationalism.”
She claimed that she was simply trying to point out the ways in which Hitler was not a nationalist. She claimed he was a "globalist," something the far-right advocates against.
Owens and other young activists are scheduled for a White House visit Thursday
