Former FBI director James Comey devised a hypothetical situation that would likely change President Donald Trump's mind that "no president" should ever face any investigations again.
In an NBC News interview with Lester Holt, Comey took the entire Trump/Russia scandal and changed the names to Obama and Iran to create a fictional scandal that the president would likely want to be investigated.
In an Oval Office interview with the White House press pool Monday, Trump said that what happened to him with the special counsel's investigation should never happen to any president again. But Comey came up with a way that Trump would change his tune.
"Close your eyes," Comey said at the beginning of his hypothetical story. "Again, change the names. Let me make one up for you: The Iranians. This is totally made up. The Iranians interfere in the election to help elect Barack Obama because they think they'll get a better nuclear deal from him. And during that election, an Obama aide meets with the Iranians and talks about the dirt they have that will help Obama get elected. And the FBI finds out about that. We should not investigate that?"
Comey went on to say that if President Obama's national security adviser lied to the FBI about his contact with the Iranians in that scenario, Trump demand he be in jail.
"And then the President, Obama, asks me to drop an investigation of that and then fires me and says, I was thinking of the Iranian thing he invites the mullahs to the Oval Office and tells them, that FBI director was a real nutjob, I lifted a lot of pressure by firing him," Comey continued. "Who on Earth doesn't think the FBI should investigate that in the hypocrisy is revealed just by changing the names. The FBI did what it absolutely had to do. The American people should be glad it's there and proud of it and the rest is just lying and noise."
