Former FBI Director James Comey was interviewed by NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Wednesday.

The interview occurred 685 days after President Donald Trump notoriously admitted to Holt he fired Comey because of the Russia investigation.

“I was going to fire Comey knowing, there was no good time to do it. And in fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won,” Trump told Holt.

In Comey's first interview since the release of Attorney General Bill Barr's letter on special counsel Robert Mueller's report, Holt laid out the timeline.

Holt asked Comey what he thought when he heard the interview with Trump.

"I thought, that's potentially obstruction of justice and I hope somebody is going to look at that," the former FBI director said in the new interview.

"Again, the president appears to be saying -- I don't know what's in his head, which is why I can't reach the conclusion -- what he appears to be saying is, 'I got rid of this guy to shut down an investigation that threatened me,'" Comey explained.
