NBC News national affairs analyst John Heilemann explained Donald Trump's masochism during a Friday appearance on "Deadline: White House" with Nicolle Wallace.
"I think we often describe Trump as cruel -- there is a sadism to the way he treats people," he explained.
"There's also the "M" in "S&M" -- he's a masochist," Heilemann concluded.
"This is the biggest promise he made in the 2016 campaign, we are going to build this big wall, Mexico is going to pay for it -- and he repeatedly fails to deliver on it," he reminded.
"Over and over again, he's like throwing banana peels on the ground in front of himself to slip over," he continued.
"The two biggest failures -- the thing Republicans wanted him to do, tear down Obamacare, the one that he said he wanted to do, build the wall -- both of them are dead on arrival," he noted. "They're not going anywhere and yet he continues to go back to them as if he enjoys this punishment."
"They're giant, colossal, stupendous political failures and he seems to enjoy reenacting them every few months," he concluded.
