'They're hiding on every front': CNN's Joe Lockhart predicts Trump's tax return strategy will massively backfire

CNN political analyst Joe Lockhart on Friday predicted that President Donald Trump's complete resistance to congressional oversight would eventually blow up in his face.

While Lockhart said there was always a risk that Democrats in the House of Representatives could overreach, he believed that Trump's insistence on giving them no cooperation on anything gave them a lot of room to work.

"The Trump administration can't be stonewalling on everything," he said. "And it really does create this atmosphere that they're hiding on every front."

Lockhart then explained that, as the law is written now, the president and his team will eventually have little choice but to let Congress see his tax returns.

"It will go to court, and if you listen to the legal analysts who have been on the air talking back and forth, it's a pretty easy case, I think, for the Democrats to win," he said. "And you know, one of the things about fishing is, you know, it seems legitimate when the other side is pedaling so hard to stop you from catching anything."

He also said that the administration's resistance to transparency will mean these controversies will keep going for the next year-and-a-half.

"With the way they're doing it, this is going to hang around until election day," he said. "I don't think that's a recipe for success."
