Senate Republicans are already promising to ‘quickly’ shut down Trump impeachment

Published

Senate Republicans have already made up their mind on the possible impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Top-ranking GOP senators, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have made clear they won’t seriously consider articles of impeachment against the president, reported The Hill.

“I think it would be disposed of very quickly,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said. “If it’s based on the Mueller report, or anything like that, it would be quickly disposed of.”

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) vowed the measure would be “defeated,” and said Democrats knew impeachment efforts were doomed.

“They know what the outcome would be,” he said.

Republicans said they would give an impeachment trial as little time as possible.

“Why on earth would we give a platform to something that I judge as a purely political exercise?” said Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC).

“We have to perform our constitutional duty,” he added, “but if people think that we’re going to try and create a theater that could give you the perception that this is a matter that rises to the level of Watergate, that’s nonsense.”

During the 2016 campaign, Bellinger signed a letter by Republican former national security officials warning against voting for Trump. Taylor did not sign the letter.

Lindsey Graham says he is keeping an open mind on the existence of a quid pro quo: ‘We’ll see what happens’

While some of the most right-wing Republican congressmen have taken over a secure hearing room to prevent testimony against President Donald Trump, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said he was keeping an open mind on the impeachment inquiry.

"New development on Capitol Hill this very hour in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump," MSNBC Stephanie Ruhle reported. "Sen. Lindsey Graham, just moments ago, commented on the GOP delay of Laura Cooper’s testimony and Bill Taylor’s explosive, 10-hour deposition just 24 hours ago."

"The House is to bring forth some credible evidence. Are you willing to keep an open mind on impeachment?" Graham was asked.

Trump conspired with House Republicans to obstruct impeachment hearings by storming secure room: report

Published

President Donald Trump was reportedly aware that House Republicans were going to obstruct impeachment hearings by storming a secure conference room.

Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Wednesday morning barged in to the secure room -- known as a SCIF -- while Democrats were scheduled to question Pentagon official Laura Cooper. But the hearing had to be halted because of the interruption.

Bloomberg later reported that Trump was aware of the stunt ahead of time.

Trump had advance knowledge and supported a protest by Republicans who told him they planned to barge into a secure hearing room on Capitol Hill where Democrats are holding impeachment testimonies, according to four people familiar with the matter.
