President Donald Trump has decided he wants to go to the moon and to Mars and as such he's saying he will "propose" allocating an additional $1.6 billion into the NASA budget.
"Under my Administration, we are restoring @NASA to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars. I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!" Trump tweeted Monday.
The tweet comes after Vice President Mike Pence suddenly announced the new decision without checking with NASA's teams.
Trump hasn't explained where the money is being taken from in his budget proposal or if the extra spending will simply add it to the deficit. It's also unclear whether this is part of a new 2020 budget or a new program he's instituting now. Funds for NASA must be passed by Congress along with the budget.
