President Donald Trump sparked tension among immigration enforcement Monday by posting on Truth Social that ICE agents deployed to airports should not wear masks while performing duties normally handled by TSA agents.
Trump's recommendation contradicts the Department of Homeland Security's policy allowing heavily-armed agents to conceal their identities through masks, citing safety concerns about agents being doxxed and harassed while detaining suspected undocumented immigrants.
While Trump stated he is "a big proponent" of ICE wearing masks, he expressed preference for "no masks" at airports, claiming the move is necessary to help resolve what he characterized as a "Democrat caused mess."
The contradiction undermines DHS officials' long-standing security justifications for mask use and puts ICE personnel in an awkward position between presidential directives and agency security protocols designed to protect agent safety.
