Mitch McConnell called Trump to tell him 'you lost the election' -- and hung up: new book

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered bad news to former president Donald Trump during a tense post-election phone call.

Then the Senate's majority leader, McConnell had angered the ex-president by congratulating Joe Biden on his election win Dec. 15, after the electoral college announced his result, and he faced Trump's wrath during a phone call explaining the announcement, according to an excerpt from "Peril," written by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa and republished by the Washington Post.

"Trump insisted he had won, uttered expletives and accused him of disloyalty," the Post reported, "and McConnell responded, 'You lost the election' and hung up."

McConnell was worried that Trump's election fraud claims would depress Republican turnout in Georgia's two special elections in January, and that's what happened -- costing his majority leadership.
