Big quake on Northern California coast follows cluster of smaller tremors farther south

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit off the Northern California coast about 60 miles west of Petrolia, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The tremor struck at 11:44 a.m. Sunday, according to the agency. Nearly 100 people from as far away as Fort Bragg and Mendocino reported feeling the tremor to the agency. The California Office of Emergency Services said on Twitter that it is working with local, state and federal authorities to assess damage from the earthquake.
