MSNBC's Eddie Glaude Jr. called out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for raising campaign cash off her unhinged threats against fellow lawmakers -- and revealed who's reveling in the controversy surrounding the newly elected congresswoman.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been protecting the Georgia Republican from Democratic threats to remove her from committee assignments over her conspiratorial views and apparent support for lynching and assassinating leading Democrats, and Glaude told "Morning Joe" that a pair of GOP senators are quietly thrilled by Greene's turn in the spotlight.
"She just raised six-figure money as a result of what she says, what she describes as a persecution," Glaude said. "So we had a moment, a moment where everyone has to make a choice. Theres no doubt about it, you have to choose whether or not you're committed to democracy or not. We know Marjorie Taylor Greene has become a face of a certain section of a mob that sacked the Capitol Jan. 6."
"You know who is excited?" he added. "Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. They are glad we're focused on her instead of what they did. There are these elements within that mob, within the Republican Party, that actually supported overthrowing the duly elected president of the United States. She represents the elements that should be banished from the body public, [but] she is providing cover, I think, for those persons who seem to be mainstream who also supported this effort."
But he said Hawley and Cruz -- who helped provoke the insurrection by announcing they would challenge the certification of Joe Biden's win -- should not escape accountability for their assault on democracy.
"We're in a moment where everyone has to make a choice," Glaude said. "You cannot split the difference. You have to choose democracy or these elements that want to undermine the democracy. Case closed, in my view."
