Scandal-plagued Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) reportedly went missing in action after suffering a humiliating primary defeat, retreating to a $2 million Florida beach house as even his staff struggled to find him.
Mills, 46, headed to the oceanfront property in New Smyrna Beach after losing his bid for a third term earlier this month. The MAGA lawmaker spent time there with a 27-year-old aspiring model, sources told the Daily Mail in an exclusive report published Sunday.
“The fact that he went missing and the staff can't find him or hear from him is pretty bad but not surprising," a source told the Daily Mail. “He does this all the time.”
Concern had grown among people close to Mills’ staff over his whereabouts and lack of communication after his defeat in Florida’s Republican primary, the Daily Mail reported.
“Staffers admit it is not unusual for Mills to go 'MIA,' but sources say his team are surprised by his lack of communication, failing to even make any public statement after his defeat and missing work obligations,” the report said.
It added that Mills keeps a campaign bus that he has been known to sleep in, making it more difficult for aides to track him down.
“He genuinely did not see himself losing this primary,” one source told the outlet.
Following his defeat, Mills spent the day at the beach house with Catherine Chils, who is described as the Republican’s longtime companion. She denied being at the property that day and said the two are just friends.
But Mills’ absence could also create problems for House Republicans, who hold a razor-thin majority and are facing a September deadline to keep the government funded.
“A bitter Mills, snubbed by Donald Trump and rejected by his own party, has little incentive to show up and lend his vote," the Daily Mail said.
The two-term congressman, the subject of a House ethics investigation, lost his primary to a conservative news anchor by 14 points. While Trump endorsed Mills, the president left him off a list of Florida Republicans he supported on the night before Election Day, according to the publication.
NEW: A day after losing his election, Cory Mills retreated to a $2 million Florida beach hideaway with a 27-year-old aspiring model to ‘blow off some steam,’ sources tell the Daily Mail. The lawmaker was allegedly ‘MIA’ for several days.
