'I'm dressing in drag': GOP ex-congressman makes extreme bet on swing state race

Former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) has made Ohio Democrats an unusual promise.

“If Ohio goes Blue for the Gov and Senator race I’m dressing in drag and doing a cold plunge!” Santos wrote on X Thursday night. “Bookmark this!”

Ohio has two of the most closely watched statewide races in the country this year. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy faces Democrat Amy Acton for governor, and Republican Sen. Jon Husted is trying to hold off former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Santos later loosened the terms. When an X user suggested he follow through if either race goes to the Democrats, Santos answered with one word: “Deal.”

Josh Marshall, founder of Talking Points Memo, had a different suggestion.

“Shouldn’t you switch from the daily routine?” Marshall wrote.

The drag pledge isn’t entirely out of character. In 2023, Santos acknowledged that he had performed in drag in Brazil years earlier, after photos surfaced.

The House expelled Santos in December 2023 after a scathing ethics report. He later pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison. President Donald Trump commuted his sentence last year. Santos now describes himself on X as a “former inmate.”
