Conservative writer Mona Charen tore into President Donald Trump in an open letter arguing that his obsession with being “respected” is built on a fundamental misunderstanding of power. Writing for The Bulwark, Charen said Trump mistakes fear and forced flattery for genuine respect, warning that people who shower him with praise privately despise him for it. She mocked his fixation on renaming buildings, strongman posturing, and self-promotional stunts as symptoms of deep insecurity that demean both the presidency and the country. Charen concluded that Trump’s greatest fear has already been realized: under his leadership, she wrote, the United States has never been less respected on the world stage.
