Trump says Putin's Ukraine invasion threat was 'a smart way to negotiate' -- but is 'surprised' he really did it

Former President Donald Trump told the Washington Examiner's David Drucker this week that he is "surprised" Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine because he believed Putin's threats were just a negotiating tactic.

Russian forces pressed in on Kyiv Tuesday with a series of strikes on residential buildings that killed four people in the Ukrainian capital, despite a fresh round of talks aimed at halting the war.

The government sharpened its case against Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, arguing in a memo in support of pretrial detention on Monday that he “imposed a command-and-control structure” on a newly created “national rally planning” chapter set up to carry out the attack.

Tarrio, who was the national chairman of the Proud Boys at the time of the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol, went before a federal judge in Miami for a detention and removal hearing on Tuesday morning. At the hearing’s conclusion, Magistrate Judge Lauren F. Louis ordered Tarrio to remain jailed while awaiting arraignment on his charges in the District of Columbia.

In his column for the New York Times, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman called out House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for using the price of gas to attack President Joe Biden saying it is yet one more example of the Republican leader's "dishonesty."

Pointing out that McCarthy tweeted, "These are not Putin gas prices. U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin III will not support one of President Joe Biden’s picks to sit on the Federal Reserve Board, Sarah Bloom Raskin of Maryland, Manchin said Monday.

The announcement casts serious doubt on the chances of Senate confirmation for Raskin, who was a Fed governor from 2010 to 2014 and deputy Treasury secretary from 2014 to 2017. She is married to U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat.
